Heya, do any readers think I should be concerned about my dual 2.5 Powermac running a non-Apple LCD display alongside a Apple 23" Cinema, with both connected to the ATI 9800 XT?

I like the idea of dual display, and was thinking of using an ADC to DVI adaptor for the 23" Cinema, then going straight DVI from the Powermac/ATI to a Lacie or Viewsonic 20" LCD as a second display. The Lacie or Viewsonic will also be used as a primary display (via RGB) for a Windoze PC.

Sad part is that I think the Powermac killed my 3.5 year old (3 year warranty) Samsung 240t 24" display, which was being shared (via dr. bott moniswitch) with the XP machine. While troubleshooting a Pmac "wake up from sleep" problem, I disconnected the DVI from the Powermac, and when reconnecting it (while powered up), the Samsung died. I don't think the Samsung and Powermac/ATI ever got along - maybe there a voltage / frequency / scan range mismatch.

DVI is a standard. You should not have any problems doing this.

None of the monitor connections are truly designed to be hot-swapped. I've never had a problem, but I've only done this with VGA.

Thanks for the reply; I spoke with a pretty knowledgeable Apple tech support guy today, and he highly doubted that the G5 or ATI fried the Samsung when I hot swapped the DVI input. Just seems right though, cuz the LCD died the moment I connected the DVI.

Hi vdrummer

I am running a LaCie 22" and an Apple Cinema 20" LCD on a G5 2.0 with an ATI 9800 XT card and have no problems, even calibrated the LaCie with BlueEye. To run the LaCie, I purchased a Griffin Technology ADC to VGA Video Adapter from MacConnection (Item#: 455835 Mfr#: 4011-ADCV) for $25 US.
