I have a very amature web site but it has always been my intention to host it from home.
I have a 1mb broadband and wanted to keep the site online all the time.
i ahve worked out that roughly anymore than two or three years on the mini and it becomes cheaper than my current hosts. Not including the 80 to 160x more space I get.
i know there are very cheap hosts out there but I need a lot of support as I am an amature as I stated above.
What kind of performance and access can i expect witha mini?
Also what are the maintencae issues with running a site from home on your own computer?
Any thoughts

what are you actually looking to host on on your website?
the reason being you may have a 1mb downstream - your upstream will only be 256k
unless you've got an expensive adsl connection.
so if you're looking to host large files then connection speeds will be very slow for the end user.
but if you reckon your not going to get a lot of traffic then you should be fine.
also double check your ISP allows hosting of websites on your service.

I'm running a webserver from my Mini. I'm using OS X server on it. The performance seems to be pretty good. Then again it's not a high traffic website. If you want to take a look go to http://www.troop86tenafly.org There isn't too much maintaince on it. you could run it off OSX client too and it would be fine. It will also depend if you want/have a domain. it would be possible to do with your cable modem.

cool i have movies on my site as well and what about traffic etc...
What are the real options available and how scalable is it?
i.e. not many hits normal broadband as hits increase get more speed / bandwidth or both?
any good companies out there that work with osx

Not sure about the traffic thing. I think it would depend on your ISP. I'm running mine off my 768K dsl line. There aren't too many ISP's that use OS X. I would increase bandwidth as hits increase. If you get 100 or so hits a day I don't think that is too bad. I get less than that on my site. If you went from say about 100 hits per day to 500-1000+ hits per day then I would say you need to get more bandwidth.
