In preparing for installing a new internal drive, I came across information that my existing drive (a Western Digital) was recalled --- in 1999! The web site said it had been successful in recovered more than 90 percent of the hard drives potentially affect.
The recall was issued 9/27/99 -- my computer was purchased more than a year later, in November 2000.
So -- what do you think the chances are that Apple would offer to give me a new drive? I was going to keep this one and leave the OS on it, and use the new drive for data. And I may still, as I back up frequently, and run Disk Aid, etc. I've already e-mailed WD about the drive as well.
In any case, it's somewhat interesting to discvoer this LONG after the fact. You'd think Apple would have known about this at the time.

Hey, it's a whopping 20! That's why I decided, finally, on a new internal to put just about everything in one spot, instead of using 1 external, then needing yet another for backups!
I think it's funny, really, more than anything else.

Why was it recalled? Do these drives tend to set your house on fire?

According to the recall notice, there was a faulty chip on it. It was a very specific group of drives, which apparently apple was using at the time. I checked, and of course, my model number is listed.
Knock on wood; I've had no problems with my drive. I'm going to install the new one this weekend and probably keep the old, recalled drive in there and run the OS off it.

I think with 4+ years of trouble free burn in, you're in the clear.

You think? I think you're right. Of course, about 2 1/2 years ago, my computer one day made a HORRIBLE noise, so bad I even wrote down the day, the time and noted the awfulness of it all. (and then I bought an external, backed the internal up and waited for the drive to die.)
What's funny to me is that I never realized it was a WD drive, which I wouldn't have bought on a bet -- b/c the only drives in this house that have failed (on PCs) have been western digitals. And here I have one -- and it was recalled.
