Hi,

I am the proud owner of a 15" Powerbook that I've owned since September. Previously I had been a PC user.

My mother is also a PC user and her machine finally died (it turns off by itself and won't boot up -- we still can't figure out what is wrong. Any ideas?) so I bought her a Mac mini for her upcoming birthday.

The thing is, she smokes in her house and I'm sort of nervous about the tiny, precious Mac mini being exposed to that.

Am I just being nervous, or are there ways she can clean the mini, or...?

Clean the outside with a mild household cleaner.

The insides you leave. The smoke won't cause any problems with the hardware, but the smoke smell could reduce resale value in the future, if it came to that.

Rest assured that the Mini's lungs won't suffer from second-hand smoke, nor a type of smoke make it giggly

On the serious side, a little cleaning as told by others here, should do. You may want to get one of those ash trays with a stand. This way she has no choice but to put the cigarette on the ash tray and away from the Mini's air intake. The smoke should not damage the internal components. I have seen people smoking and placing the cigarette butt right on top of the computer's case.

I dunno... anyone who has had to service computers owned by chainsmokers can attest to the filth that builds up inside. With so little airspace inside the mini, I would be especially worried about airflow and heat regulation. I have seen folks recommend making rudimentary filters to try to catch that stuff before it enters the computer. That way you can pull the filter and clean it. Pantyhose or some such?

I used to smoke around my 15" PB, and a decent amout of my friends smoke so it was in smoked filled apartments quite frequently. It never picked up any of the smell, maybe b/c it's aluminum? Anyway, I just quit a while ago, so problem solved

Maybe it is because as a smoker, you can't smell it! I GUARANTEE that it smells.

Who cares about the mini? The worrisome part is her lungs and yours being exposed to that.

Yeah, I've bought stuff from smokers by accident. I'd never do it knowingly. The stuff is horrible. It goes unnoticed b/c everything they own smells like that.

I've thrown stuff away like that. If you go to resell it and disclose the smoking thing you take it in the shorts anyhow.
