I don't know if this has been discussed elswhere, but I was wondering if anyone knows what is going on here.

I brought my xServe G5 SP in for a CPU core voltage malfunction, and the tech said that the CPU had to be replaced. The cost for parts (1 x Processor Module 2GHz) is $625 USD, labor $135 USD. So why is the dual G5 $1000 USD more than the single in the Apple Store?

Also, looking at the xServe mobo, where the second CPU supposed to be, is a covered CPU socket. Would it be possible to plug in another G5 CPU and have a dual CPU setup? The Apple Store guy sounded unsure about this question, but I know when you get the xServe spare parts kit for G5, all of them have the same mobo in the package.

Can anyone enlighten me?

The last I heard, Apple was not a non profit organization. They dont sell you your computer at cost.

If the motherboard is the same, the second processor should work in it, but dont expect them to advertise that...or support you if something goes wrong.

I wonder if a 2.3Ghz would be a drop in replacement...

while you're at it, go ahead and opt for a dual 2.3 if you get the option (not that I'd expect them to tell you that it is even an option).

Probably wishful thinking, but a 2.3 would be a nice replacement if the mobo's bus speed can be cranked up to support the higher frequency.

I don't want be inconsiderate, but even non-profits, during an event drive, sell you things to make money.

Anyways, the second socket has intrigued me and I'll probably investigate this further.

Apple usually requires you to return the broken part for spares, or pay horrendous prices for the spares. Maybe if you could find a G5 from somewhere else...

Once I get the xServe back, I'll post a pic of the CPU socket mentioned. Maybe someone can confirm that it is indeed a G5 CPU socket.

Your'e right P, Apple wants the broken part, in exchnage for a replacement. Never had to order a 'new' part, however, so I don't know what their retail pricing sheme for parts is.
