there is not even a place to connect external power to it, so no.

and it appears to be a Radeon 9800XT Mac Edition.

The Ati 9800 Retail 128MB does have a power plug on it and if bought new, comes with the needed splitter. From what I have read on the internet, this needs to be hooked up as the card needs the power.

The other versions of the 9800 do not have this extra power that I know of but I cant be 100% certain.

I have a retail 9800 Pro in my G5, I have it connected to external power. It requires some rerouting of power cables through the case, rubbing alcohol, and band-aids.

yeah, the retail 9800 Pro has a 4 pin connector, but this is an XT and it's OEM, not retail.

Bypass this card and get the X800XT. A little more expensive, a whole helluvalot more powerful. And you'll only appreciate this more once the Tiger is out of the cage.

Four models of the Radeon 9800:

Radeon 9800 Pro (OEM) - 128MB, AGP 8x Pro, for G5 only

Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition (Retail) - 128MB, AGP 4x, for G4/G5, requires additional power plug

Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition (Retail) - 256MB, AGP 8x Pro, G5 only

Radeon 9800XT (OEM) - 256MB, AGP 8x Pro, G5 only, will take up the adjacent PCI slot space

Man, who says the Mac doesn't get a variety of cards!

I agree with awcopus, though, for the extra cash, the Radeon X800 is a better upgrade than any Radeon 9800.

I've searched..and can't find the answer on how to provide power to a 9800 Pro Retail Edition (Red PCB) in a G5.

Are there connectors available on the market and would anyone be able to provide linkage?

Thanks much.

You can go to any pc store and buy a pig tail power connector (you should have had one supplied with the card). One end plugs into the 9800 and the male, female end gets connected to the power cord that connects to the back of the Superdrive and one goes to the Superdrive itself. I picked up one of theses cards up today and it took all of 5 minutes to install it. You do have to pull the Superdrive out and route the power cable through the opening where the ATA connector goes from the motherboard to the back of the Superdrive.

Thanks for the tip. Was just wondering how I got to the connectors since the G5 is so clean inside. I hate to clutter the interior but I'd hate to leave my 9800 gathering dust more

Thanks much

What is it on a 9800 Pro that takes so much power? I've heard a figure of 75w power usage for this card? Is it the card itself or is it the fan on the card that takes the power? If it's the fan, would an Arctic ATI 1 cooler use less power? I'm thinking of getting a 9800 Pro Mac Edition, but I think the PSU on my Quicksilver is only 200 and something watts.

I think its a little more than 200Watts :

Here's what Apple says :

Electrical requirements and agency approvals
• Line voltage:115V AC (90V to 132V AC) or 230V AC
(180V to 264V AC)
• Frequency:47 to 63 Hz,single phase
• Maximum continuous power:360W
• Meets ENERGY STAR requirements

I'll bet the fan only pulls a couple watts at most. Actually, I'd be surprised if it's even 1 watt. Most of the extra power is probably used by the GPU, with a little for the RAM and memory controller, etc.

I don't know how it compares to a 9800Pro but I can tell you that a 9800XT pulls 46 watts more than a 9600 with 128MB.

X800XT cost twice the 9800 Pro SE.
I can get 9800 Pro SE for $250. Is that a good deal?
So for sure they dont require auxiliary power?

When you say 9800 Pro SE, I assume you mean the retail ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition (the Mac compatible card). This card is a G5 only card, is AGP 8x Pro and does NOT have an auxilary power cable. It gets it's power from the AGP 8x Pro slot in the Power Mac G5.
