Here is what I have;
iMac 800MHz 15" FPD with Superdrive
OS 10.3.7 1 GB SDRAM

It is one of the first built, I was on the waiting list to get it in 02.

This computer has worked without any problems until now and just when I was starting to think I was clever for not getting iCare the Superdrive goes out.

I started having problems occasionally when the computer started to eject the CDs and DVDs without opening them. Now it does it every-time and I cannot start up on a CD. The computer tries for a while but eventually gives up and ejects the CD.

What I need to know is how can I check to find out if the SuperDrive is bad and where is the best place to buy one. I'd be willing to swap it out myself if I could get information on what tools are needed and some kind of instructions.

I was able to find this part on line here

Apple IDE SuperDrive DVD-R /CD -RW
SuperDrive 2x/6x/8x/4x/24x Internal IDE 3.5"
Compatible for all the eMac & iMac LCD computers Once installed you will be able to run and burn from * iDVD and * DVD Pro software and use*iTunes
You must be running OS 9.2 or higher. * iTunes & iDVD is only supported in OSX
Manufactured by Pioneer DVR106Mac
New $189.00

Is it the correct part and can I find a better price?

Thanks for any help

You can install almost any optical drive into the iMac. Newegg.com has the Pioneer DVR-109 (16x supports 6x Dual layer) for around 82 bucks...I got the DVR 108 for my Powermac not too long ago.

You will simply need to run Patchburn once to have it recognized by the i Apps.
