I used to be a longtime pc user. Then I bought my first mac. A 15 inch AL powerbook. 1gig ram, 80gb 5400, superdrive..... etc
My machine at the time that I purchased my mac was a 600mhz p3 w/ 512 mb of ram. For the first year that I had my mac I almost NEVER used my pc. Now, I kind of wish I could use it for games... as the 19inch monitor still looks awesome, plus I find myself backing up alot of my dvds (my younger siblings scratch up everything,so I got in the habit of copying every dvd I buy for their use.) also I plan to process and encode mpg from my ReplayTV box (think tivo for geeks).
I am thinking of building a pc to do this... 2 dvd burners, a powerful p4 or amd cpu, 1gig ram and a gaming video card. I love osX, and I do find myself using my laptop all the time, It is nice for traveling but 70% of the use that my laptop gets is at home. I am thinking that if I bought a powermac I would never use my powerbook anymore and would be therefore wasting the cost of it.
Anyone think a G5 could do the things I want to do faster or better? My biggest thing about the pc is the gaming that i would be capable of doing since I can't do it on my current pc and almost none of the games are available for mac. Perhaps I have just answered my own question but I figured some input would be nice.
Also, what is happening with the G5 in the coming months, is there any reason to delay purchase? (my brother is about to buy a G5)

You seem to want to play games, so just buy a PC.
I can see how if you got a G5 you may not use the Powerbook much. As you said, you dont travel that much, so I think you should just get a PC to play games. If you dont travel, then the G5 would probably just replace the Laptop.
You want a new, powerful computer, so I can see why you are thinking G5, but you want to play games, so the G5 is out.
Buy the G5 (or equivalent at the time) when the laptop needs replacing.

If you want to play games, get a PC or a console. It seems needless to purchase the Power Mac if it will only replace your powerbook, and you won't be able to play as many games on it.

no need to get a g5 unless you need the g5 for extra power. if your powerbook can do everything you need to do on a mac then get a pc and play your pc games.

The Mac'll do everything you want with the exception of playing games. I've got a PM G4, my PB g4, and a couple of nice PCs. One runs Linux, one is mostly for games. That said, most of the games I play are on my Xbox. The PC I used for WW2 strategy games, for the most part.
85% of my computer use at home is my PB. The PM is faster and has dual monitors, but I much prefer to move around the house. I'm typing this in bed.
Figure out how you'll use the machines, and that'll give you your answers much better than anyone here can.
