I currently have a 12" PB (867Mhz, 1.12GB Ram - yup, weird number, it's a Rev.A with 1GB stick) and find that at 640MB it was sluggish for what I was using (Entourage, Virtual PC, skEdit and MAMP mainly), pushing it up to 1GB+ made it really usable.
And that's with current levels of memory usage

If I where to get a Mini I'd use it as a home workhorse - mail and web server in the background, local email / web browsing and maybe some photoshop in the foreground, so 1GB RAM is going to get pretty full, pretty fast.

Is there any way than the Mini will be able to take more RAM
- is it only a single DIMM in there ?
- will it support 2GB DIMMs when they're afforable

My alternative is to continue to use a P-IV for the job, but I hate the amount of space the beige tower takes up !

Time will tell. It's all theory at this point.

There are no 2GB dimms without ECC yet. The mini cannot use the current 2GB dimms available.

Here is one. As far as I know the hardware is capable of it so a software update down the line is possible, but not certain.

"The system has a single DIMM socket which takes standard PC2700 modules, although it is slightly tricky to gain access to it. The largest available upgrade at present is a 1GB module, but I believe that the Mac Mini will also be certified for use with 2GB modules when they enter production. For the average Linux user, 1GB will be more than adequate. The 256MB Apple supply is far too little for Mac OS X."
