I have a 1GHz G4 iMac. I want to take out the 80GB Hard Drive and replace it with a Maxtor 200GB Hard Drive. I have two questions before I do this.

#1 - The instructions from xlr8yourmac.com say to use thermal paste, I got heat sink compound at Radio Shack, is this the same thing?

#2 - How much room do I need on an external drive to use CCC to clone my drive and install it on the new drive? I have an external 120GB firewire drive, but it only has 13GB left, can I clone my 80GB drive or do I need the 80 GB?

Any help is appreciated!
thanks

#1. Yes, it's the same thing
#2. How much room you need depends on how much data you have. If your 80GB is full, you would basically have to have 80GB (there are ways around this using compressed disk images). If you only have 5GB on your 80GB, then 13GB would be enough--but you wouldn't be going with a 200GB if this were the case. Also, if there is stuff on the other drive, don't bother with Carbon Copy Cloner. You can just use the Disk Utility to make a disk image and image it back to the new one. Your best option is probably going to be to get an additional external drive cabinet to put a drive in so you can just clone straight to the new drive.

You REALLY should use thermal paste on those things.

Just to let everyone know, I installed it with help from a friend tonight. Works great! Love the extra space and it seems faster, I must not have had a 7200rpm disk in before.
By the way
I did use Thermal Paste!
