I have recently brought an APC 1500va (900W) Battery Backup for my G5 system.

When the power goes out there is a buzzing sound from the G5. Is this normal, or is there something wrong with my computer?

The batter backup says its only on like 50% load or so with everything connected.

Thanks

p.s. the computer stays on but I always shut it down fearing it is going to die! :-(

We have a lot of power outages so this is a real issue for me.

Are you sure it's the G5 buzzing?

I have the same setup and when the power goes out, I'm pretty sure the sound comes from the UPS, not the computer.

The wave form from the AC outlet is different from the wave form created by the UPS. I haven't had any issues with my computer, but other devices have behaved differently. It's been a REALLY long time since I've been somewhere that the power ever goes out, so I couldn't tell you any more.

But I do think the UPS does actually buzz.

I will check again, the UPS has a constant buzz, not the once in a while beeping, is yours going constant?

It is definitely the G5's power supply (Orig. Dual 1.8) that is buzzing, from what I gather reading online it is because of the square wave the APC backup puts out, upgrading to a smart APC would fix it (sine wave?), but I don't want to spend anymore right now.

Will this hurt my G5's power supply while it is on the backup? Or is the buzzing nothing to worry about?

I just bought APC 800 Rsomething, its said to have sine wave.

I was confused with the buzz just like you while testing it. Its the UPS here but I could hear it from my mac. Its a strange frequency sound here and tricks my ears as its coming from my G5 front alliminium.

BTW as you bought that APC, hope you didn't install its software from Install CD. Its not compatible with 10.3.8. If you have installed, uninstall it using the uninstaller included on cd and go with OSX power preferences as APC got built in support on 10.3.4+
