Subject says most of it. Anyone using Mac OS X Server 10.3 on an iMac G5 (in my case 20" 1.8GHz)? I've used it before on my iMac G4, but didn't put it on the new G5 yet. From reading the forums looks like I could install from disc 2, but I wanted to find out if anyone else is doing this yet. If so, a few questions.

1.) Any issues with iLife 05 apps? I know the disc won't let you install, but there are workarounds and I've already installed under the client version. I don't use gargeband, so my only concerns are iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie HD, and iDVD.

2.) Anyone have a way for the login window to show pictures instead of typing the login names? I've tried this before and even with the options set right in the system preferences accounts panel you still need to type both names and passwords.

3.) Any fan or heat issues with Server? I've read the complaints about noisey fans but mine under the client version seems just fine so far.

Thanks for any advice.

To install it I would do it the same way I installed it on my Mini. Via Target Mode.

iLife 05 I don't know of any work arounds but I do know that iTunes WILL install but the other ones give you a message that they can't be installed on the server version.

Why would you want to? If you are running OS X server it wouldn't be as secure showing a list of names. have one enter the username and password makes it more secure.

Can't answer the question about heat issues. My only question is why would you want to install OS X server on an iMac G5? doesn't make much sense to me.

My suggestion is if you want something inexpensive to run OS X server is to get a Mac mini.

typhoon, thanks for the info.

The reason for having the list is that the iMac is in my house, so I don't have any need to make it secure from family members. But I do want some of the more advanced web, mail, and firewall capabilities as well as being able to do remote administration and monitoring.

I didn't consider the mini since once you add keyboard, mouse, and 20 inch LCD you are close to the price of the iMac G5. The iMac gives me a more powerful desktop with a bigger hard drive and better integration and less clutter for about the same price (mini + apple LCD = computer, LCD, two external power supplies; iMac G5 = one unit).

You should be able to, I wanted to know if anyone has.

You can't boot from the install disc (since it is 10.3 and the iMac needs 10.3.6 to boot), but apparently you can use disc 2 to install the "server" bits.

If you try to install iLife 05 on Mac OS X Server, you get an error message that it can't be installed.

You can still do this through the client version of OS X. The Server verions really only comes with 3 other apps that make it a server. Server admin, Workgroup manager and server monitor. OS X client will do mail if you want it to. remote admin. Use VNC or the Microsoft remote dekstop. I use VNC for my Server machine.

Because the OS X server disks are only 10.3 while the iMac G5 is running i Believe 10.3.4 or something so it wouldn't have the booting capabilites in 10.3 server disks unless you got the disk from a new Xserve.
