I am currently considering which of the subject machines to go with, the question relates to use of an LCD monitor which operates in both landscape and portrait mode. Does either of these machines work with LCDs in pivot mode, ie 1680x1050 landscape, 1050x1680 portrait?

Alas, the only graphics card on the Mac that allows portrait mode is the Radeon 9800. (ATI might have released more cards since then that support it.) Of course, there's no way to put such a card in an iMac or mini.

I'm sure that it'd be possible to write a universal portrait driver for Mac OS X, but nobody's done it, unfortunately.

I remember seeing that the 9200 supported portrait mode as well. Let me see if I could find that site again. Now if its the 9200 for a Mac or PC is a whole other story.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

The Apple drivers don't offer portrait mode, and the ATI drivers only work on retail ATI cards. It's still not gonna work.
