Hi,

While I love my G4 iBook I've decided that I need something faster, so I want to get a Powermac. Probably the most intensive program program I will be running is Photoshop. I will also be using iTunes, GarageSale and Safari simultaneously. Obviously I don't need a top-of-line machine because I'm not doing anything crazy like video-editing or gaming or 3-D rendering with real-time anti-aliasing on RAMStrangler 13.0, but I'd like something that could last me a few years.

I'd like to keep the cost <$3000 without monitor. I will be using a 17-inch Samsung monitor to start with. BTW, I have my heart set on a Powermac, so please no replys saying that I would do just fine with a iMac. I want that sexy aluminum tower. Thanks.

I would go for the dual 1.8 and get a 20" Apple LCD for $999. that is about $3,000 and you will LOVE it

I have the Dual 1.8 at home and can't complain, my Dual 2.0 at work feels about the same speed, the Dual 2.5's feel noticeably faster but then you would need to keep your 17" monitor

so for $3,000 you get a NICE 20" LCD and a dual powermac

If you don't need a monitor, throw 2-3GB of RAM in to and you will be set!

just my thoughts...

hell, get the dual 2.0Ghz and upgrade the RAM and HD space and you'll be set!

it's got advantages over the 1.8Ghz system such as 8 RAM slots vs. 4 on the dual 1.8, and it's got PCI-X slots vs. PCI on the dual 1.8. this in adition to a larger standard HD make thsi one a no brainer to me since it fits nicely in your budget.

If you don't need to purchase right away, do realize that we are due for new Power Macs from anywhere from now through late June, at the very latest. If you really need to buy now, though, the DP 2.0 is my recommendation: I am a proud owner since June.

I'd see what the Ides of March (the 15th) brings. If there's no PowerMac update then, run out and get a dual 1.8. Unless you need PCI-X, you won't see the benefit from the different mainboard, and you can roll the extra cash into memory/HD/video upgrades.

I'd get the dual 2Ghz just cause it'll have a better resale value down the road. Plus having dual 2Ghz processors is so much more sexy sounding that dual 1.8Ghz ones haha...

It really does irk me that Apple never pre announces anything. I think I will try to wait at least until the end of March and see what happens. I don't want to do what I did in the case of my iBook which I purchased about 2 weeks before the update.

If nothing happens by the end of March I'll probably go with the dual 2.0 and some extra ram.

you just proved to yourself exactly why Apple doesn't pre-announce anything. people would hold off on buying because they know for a fact that something is going to be announced.

I do think a general roadmap for the processors would be nice to have, but for the most part, IBM has been VERY secretive of their 970 roadmap. Freescale on the other hand is lettin' it all hang out there with a pretty decent one.
