Anyone else having this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?

Every once in awhile my fans will kick into high gear while I am surfing the web or chatting or basically anything that is not graphics or memory intensive. Not really sure what is going on..

After they speed up all crazy, a couple seconds later they go quiet again..

This has just begun happening now that I installed the new update for Panther.. I think it is 10.3.8....

Any clue?

Turn Processor Performance (under energy saver) to: Highest (yes, it sounds counter intuitive, but something is messed up with Automatic under 10.3.8.)

Yes there's many discussions here and on the apple discussion forum regarding this latest update. It seems to effect a large number of people, I myself will wait till the next one is released.

If your unable to get this to work, your only recourse appears to be a archive and install. A number of people did this over on the apple forum.

Reinstalling the system did prove to solve the problem?

I am having the same issues, and I re-installed my system just before updating to 10.3.8

Dual 1.8

I did what Ganesha suggested and we will see what happens.

Well, every once in awhile I will experience the same thing on my DP 2.0, but I am only running 10.3.5 on my G5. When this happens, I have noticed that my U3 Heat Sink's reported temperature spikes up to the 170 degree F range for for a couple of seconds and then goes back down to normal levels, followed by the fans returning to normal speed. I imagine that there's a minor bug that causes occasional erroneous temperature reporting. I am unsure as to how this relates to the new reports about fan speed issues in 10.3.8, and I probably won't be upgrading to it because of what I have heard.

This seems to have "fixed" it for me. No more symptoms.

10.3.8 actually fixes the problem you're describing, which is a fan rev from a single fan, the main logic board backside fan, related to temperature spikes in the memory controller. This problem is specific to rev. B models; it never happens on rev. A models because they use a slightly different U3 which runs cooler.

The fan rev issue introduced by 10.3.8 mentioned by most people (which can be fixed by setting Energy Saver to Highest) is a general or all-fans issue.

My G5 also has a noisy fan, and even after I reset the energy saver to highest, it's still a lot noisier than any Mac I've ever owned... which isn't too much of a problem unless I'm recording something, and then the mic picks up the fan and ruins the recording. I suppose this is not fixable completely? Should I just wear earplugs when sitting at the iMac and enjoy the peaceful silence?

Setting Energy Saver to Highest seems to help a bit, but the fans on my G5 (Rev A dual 1.8) are still far louder than they were under 10.3.7. I'll be doing an archive/install downgrade over the weekend, which I'm sure will be loads of fun.

I'm doing the same thing later tonight. If 10.3.9 doesn't fix it, I guess i'll be staying at 10.3.7 till Tiger.

Seems that after I changed the enregy saver to highest and restarted, the fan began to rev until I thought it would fly out of the monitor, seriously: the pitch increased and I beganto duck down under the chair!
When I shut down completely and started up again the fan noise was noticeably less, and then the next time I fully shut down and started up (not restarted) the fan noise was considerably less - although it still exists and interferes with sound recordings). I'm running 10.3.8.
