i am purchasing my first mac in a couple of weeks. i have done a great deal of research hoping to find the best powermac to fit my needs. my main use for the mac will be for my degree. ill be using photoshop, illustrator, quark, and indesign. i dont suspect ill use the comp for word processing or the internet. thats what my laptop is for.

anyhow i have decided to buy the single processor 1.8, upgrade the memory myself, and the gfx card come summer. i know for a fact that it will be able to handel the programs perfectly b/c the g4s at school handel the work without problems. i know there is the new OS (tiger) coming late march but if i wait that long there will be no use for the comp seeing how school will be out soon. i dont mind spending the 130.00 to upgrade later on. is this a good plan? i am under a strict budget. i cant buy the dual processor and then an additional monitor.

is there any good monitor similar to cleanliness of a mac. i may have to buy a cheapo and save a bit and then spend the money on a mac display.

any suggestions would be great

Nobody knows when Tiger is coming, Apple has only said the first half of this year. Don't count on March.

As for a monitor, I'd receommend a nice NEC/Mitsubishi Diamondtron CRT. A lot of bang for the buck, very high quality.

it can bet you with almost 100% certainty that it will NOT be out in march. figure 3 weeks from the time it goes Gold Master to release. keep in mind, it's not done yet. still quite a few major bugs.

I'll leave it at that.
