hope right forum
for a high end G5 ( 2.0 dual) which high end card is prfered: ATI or NVIDIA.
I eventtually plan on two Sansung 24" monitors. they are 100 $ cheaper than apples, have a 100 $ rebate, and rotate to portrait.
I think I get much more flexibility with 2 24" rather than one 30"
it is interesting to note that the samsung models are 1 " bigger, but same resolution.
they might even be brighter.
thanks for thoughjts on video cards

Get the ATI X800. It can Drive one 30" or any other 2 monitors. The Nvidia will take up the PCI slot adjacent to it because of its XXX Size cooling system.

At the moment, only the retail Radeon Displays control panel allows rotation to portrait (for Radeon cards). The nVidia cards are controlled by the Displays control panel, which does not offer portrait rotation.

reader50:
when you say retail disply cards, do you mean the ones you get with the G5? for rotation?
ie is then the card to get the ATI x800? this some seems to take up two PIC slots I think.
also, if I end up with two samsung 24 ", will this card run two DVI monitors, not one ADC ( or is there a converter for ADC to DVT?)
thanks rotut

I just bought such an adapter to drive a Benq DVI LCD display the other day. It's about 40 CAN$ (around 30 US$) from Apple. You might find some from other manufacturers for less... Get the job done just fine!

Only the retail box ATI Radeon cards support display rotation (Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition, 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition, Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition). The ATI cards from Apple included with the PowerMacs - aka OEM cards (i.e., Radeon 9600 Pro, 9600XT, 9800 Pro & 9800XT) - do not support display rotation. It is missing from the firmware and cannot be added.
The Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition is a single-slot card. All PCI/PCI-X slots remain open.
It will support two digital displays; one up to 1920x1200 and one 30" (i.e., it has one single-link ADC/DVI port and one dual-link DVI port).
Only the two Apple OEM nVidia GeForce 6800 cards can support two 30" displays. And, these two cards occupy the adjacent PCI slot.
If you must have display rotation, the retail boxed aftermarket ATI cards are the only solution.
For G5s, the two best ATI solutions are the Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition (G5-only, 256MB VRAM, two digital outs including one ADC port) or the Radeon X800 Mac Edition. Both are single-slot cards. Apple's 9800XT occupies two slots and doesn't have display rotation).
For G4s, the best card presently available is the Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition (128MB VRAM, one DVI and one VGA port). Runs in either 2x or 4x AGP PowerMac G4s (i.e., any PowerMac G4 with an AGP slot).

ADC to DVI connector adapters are about $30.

everything else is very good and well, but this one I gotta say, it's not only the best card currently available, it's the best one there ever will be. 2x/4x AGP is pretty damn old. anything newer would be killed by the 4x AGP bandwidth anyway.
and yeah, the X800XT is the best card out for the Mac unless you absolutely need 2 30" displays.
besides, the ATI mac cards are infinitely easier to overclock than the nVIDIA cards.

Hello again
this may be common knowledge but I just noticed it today: 10.4 seems to support cinema display rotation. I have the new Samsung 24" and am looking forward to it.
the link takes a while to load and you have to wait for the images and the story is in the middle of the page:

doesn't support display rotation for any of my two displays. it's only on SOME apparently.
I'm using a retail Radeon card though, so I can anyway if I feel so inclined, but not all of those options are available on every display, whereas they most definitely are if you buy a retail ATI Radeon card.

I guess its not clear to me what you are saing, Mort:
are you running 10.4? does your display panel in 10.3.8 have the rotation element noted in the picture of the URL ref?
just curious. I ended up with two suamsungs: the 24" and the 21 with 200 $ less than apples p[rice.
\
the cables aren't as elegant and I don't seem to want to rotate the second display as much as it has more into than my previous CRT.
but I thought that the picture from 10.4 might indicate rotation will be an OS thing not a video card task in 10.4
any ideas on 10.4?

I am running 10.4 with one LCD via DVI and one LCD via VGA, and neither have rotation availible via the displays system pref pane. the ATI Displays pane though allows it because I have a retail Radeon card.

were you able to see the display prefs in the ref I sent? it took a long time to load
over to the right was the rotation degree.
maybe a later build?

yeah I see it in the image, but it's not availible for either of my displays.
and it's not possible that they're using a newer build, I promise.
what I'm thinking is that maybe it is only good for Apple's own displays.

wow wouldn't that be the bummer after getting two samsungs that are nicer and cheaper that App's and no dead pixels for a year and they both rotate.
we will see i guess. maybe its software that the company that sells the bracket adds to display prefs?
thanks for thinking about it
