I just tried connecting my 17" G4 flat panel iMac to a TV, through the DVI>S-video adapter originally supplied with my 12" PowerBook. With the PowerBook, it worked just fine so far - the PB's LCD stayed at its 1024x768 resolution, while the TV out was at a lower 800x600.

I cannot get the same to work with the iMac though - while it does seem that it's not in a forced mirror configuration (like the iBooks by default), it's still not working like the PowerBook. Changing the TV resolution changes the internal LCD as well, I can change the LCD resolution afterwards, but it's still not correct - if I set the TV-out to 800x600 (NTSC) and the LCD to 1440x900, it looks like the LCD runs at 1440x900 (judging by the pixel size), but the image is cropped to 800x600 and there's a black frame around it.

Is this:
- a hardware limitation of the iMacs?
- my failure to configure it properly?
- something that needs a hack to get it to work like the iBooks?
- a wrong adapter and I need to get a separate one for my iMac?

TIA.
