hello all,

I'm getting my G5 2x2, and am thinkng of getting an upgrade for my RAM (more 1GB in two 512MB DIMMS).
My question is:
Is the Crucial standard memory good for this G5?, or does anyone report any problems?
The price difference is big...

While Apple's RAM is extremely overpriced, Crucial is overpriced. You can find superior prices for name brand RAM.

This subject is certainly divisive and your going to see a lot of people on the either side, saying that cheaper is just as good, vs. you get what you pay for.

My opinion, crucial while more expensive then some other brands provides a level peace of mind, quality and top customer service.

Apple has in the past tightened its memory specifications in its firmware update (or was it OS updates I forget) and many people were complaining that their memory was failing to pass. This may or may not happen in the future but I do go by the philosphy that you get what you pay for and crucial is well worth the expense.

Peace
Mike

I have used nothing but Crucial for many years now and have never had a bad stick or any issue caused by ram. Yes, Crucial costs a few dollars more but eveytime I read on these or other forums about people having trouble with ram I can rest assured that my money was well spent. It's not THAT much more expensive. I have the same machine as you and have added an extra gig of Crucial ram and am looking to add at least another gig soon. You CAN get cheaper ram....but you bought a Mac knowing that you COULD HAVE gotten a cheaper computer. In both cases I believe that you get what you pay for.

I agree, but I wanted some feedback anyway...
You say the non-branded Crucial (or Crucial branded - the cheap ones from the link) modules are more expensive than other brands?
even so, do you think it's ok?

DO NOT GO FOR CHEAP RAM! You do get what you pay for. Only purchase RAM from a reputable dealer. Crucial, OWC, TransIntl are a few...even Apple! It's worth the few extra $. If there is a problem you'll be happy you did. A good dealer will stand by their RAM. Also, G5's are finicky about RAM. Compatiblity is a big issue, so be sure to match the brand and type of the original RAM.

I think my question wasn't understood:

The link I posted is from Crucial, and they have three types of RAM, the top one, is the cheapest.

My question is:

Is that an ok RAM or should I *really* go for the other two?

The ram you're asking about is exactly what I've always used. I've never spent the extra $$ for Ballistix with or without led's. You;re considering genuine Crucial ram. It'll be fine for you. And in the unlikely circumstance you do have a problem they'll replace it without question.
