i am looking to buy a desktop, and not break the bank. the g4 cube looks really neat, and can be upgraded to a G4 1.7 i think.

i saw on ebay, cubes going for arond $300, and am guessing to upgrade will cost another 4-500.

is this a better option than a mac mini??

how much and how hard do you think it will be to upgrade?
ibook 900 12.1" combo 640mb =)
powerbook 1.33 15" 768mb =P

I have an upgraded Cube, to 1.7 GHz, with a 120 GB hard drive and 1 GB RAM. I think the Mac mini is a better value, if you don't mind the 80 GB max laptop drive.

The Mac mini has a better GPU, comes standard with a combo drive, and has USB 2.

I still have my cube, with a 120GB (8MB cache) HD, 1GB RAM, and 1.2GHz sonnet cpu. Still a very nice + capable machine (I no longer use it ... but rather use a 2x2GHz G5 or my 20" G5 iMac at home).

The main trade-off: Cube has a faster (3.5") HD, while the mini has a faster system bus. Also the cube is more easily upgraded (memory, graphics card, etc.). Cube also has dual monitor support, but many don't have a CD-R or Superdrive (but upgrading is possible).

If they are really going for $300, it's not a bad route: I'm certainly never going to let mine go!
