for the past year my dual 2 with a 9800 pro card has pretty much kept me up all night. untill today.

a quick visit to PC world and my wallet becomming £9 lighteri walked out with a VGA silencer (arctic cooling) rev. 3 this thing is built for the radeon card and now i can hardly hear my G5 its whisper quiet!!! im amazed how such a small fan (the standard) could have made so much noise!!

The Arctic Cooling Silencers are good, but I had a problem with the fan wire burning out on two of them.

thanks for the head up ill keep an eye on it.

for my 9800 it did require leaving out one bit (the bracket underneath) due to the dimensions but thats all the problems so far

I got the Maxtor 250 in my G5 now and just bought a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300gig (16mb cache) to put in... do you think it will make the fans run louder yet?

I already got the louder 9800 in here, as he pointed out.

The latest Seagate drives are pretty darn quite, well worth looking into if you're in the market.

Does it block a PCI slot?

the extra HD shouldnt change the fan speed but the 8 other fans in there are pretty darn quiet anyways.

unfotunatly it does block a PCI slot so im now left with barely one free it nearly blocks two but personally for the use i have my computer for thats a small sacrifice.

On the strength of the initial post I purchased the same VGA silencer.

Very quiet + easy to install = very happy

what version of the 9800 pro are both of you using? i was interested in picking up a 9800 pro special edition, would this silencer work on it? i know there are a few 9800 pro's (oem, retail & se), does the silencer work on all three versions?

I have a 9800 Pro OEM.

Check out Arctic Cooling's website. It lists both the 'ATI Silencer 1 (rev 2)' and the 'VGA silencer (rev 3)' as compatible with the 9800 SE.

Good luck!

OMG did you overlcock the BLT edrive? I heard if you deguass the Pram that holding option shift command A-S-S keeps the fragmetntiona to a miniummum requirement. Unless you have a G4 pipleine, then thins are obviously quite different indeed because of the performance boost.
