Since the 10.3.8 update, has anyone else noticed that the picture/pdf doc. created when using "apple shift 4" to create a pdf file photograph of a selectable page of text or images, now creates just the text "picture 1" on the desktop without the icon and when desktop is selected the file disappears completely from the hard drive.

I think it's an isolated problem on your system, because it's working just fine on my system.

This isn't an iMac/eMac/mini topic in any way, this is a Mac OS topic. Please use more care in the future when deciding where to post.
