Which way does the fan blow? Does it blow downwards on the heatsink? Or upward, pulling air through the heatsink?

I couldn't, I put on a different fan. I switched back to the factory fan... all is better now. Only problem is the factory fan is dying. I've emailed gigadesigns quite a few times about geting a new one, but no dice. I googled the specs, and it's a max flow 80mm fan, and it flows about 41 cfm. The fan that I replaced it with was only pushing 31cfm, hence the heatsink getting way too hot. Hence the reason I switched back, but now my computer is noisy again. ARgh. Maybe I'll just get some stupid adjustable fan, like this:

Who knows.

I'd want a Vantec tornado... the 80mm version pushes 84.1cfm of air. that would definitely let you OC it a bit loud as hell, but my CPU fan is already as loud as it needs to be to piss me off, and it's the stock Apple one

would it fit?

Doubt it will help. The problem with OC'ing 7455 upgrades isn't heat, its voltage.

the 7447s is heat hopefully.
I'd love to see a nice side by side chart of some stats of the 7447 vs. 7457 vs. 7455

How's the performace of the dual 1.3? My brother has a 733mhz Digital Audio, and is wondering about getting that upgrade.

Pretty good, I enjoyed mine.
But honestly, I think it would bee stupid to get one now. It is only $100 more for a Dual 1.8GHz 7447, which will smother a Dual 1.33 7455 is everything imaginable.

not to mention it will use less power

I like it. It's quite damn fast..... about the 1.8, I was undert he impression that the complete lack of L3 cache really really hurt the performance of the chip.... kinda like buying a ferrari with only 2 gears.

it hurts it, it doesn't kill it. a dual 1.8 will still be faster than a dual 1.33 because of the sheer clockspeed difference.

also keep in mind, everything on those processors is when they were clocked at 1.73Ghz, the Giga ones are now 1.8Ghz so this will help a bit.

If there's anyting else just tell me where to look, I don't feel like sifting through 6 pages.

exactly
we have determined the performance of a 7447A processor running at 1.733GHz to be equivalent to that of a 7455 running at 1.467GHz.
they sell their CPUs at 1.8Ghz, not 1.73, and that's also saying it's equal to a 1.467Ghz upgrade, you were talking about a 1.33Ghz upgrade.
that's diferences on both ends, which means that the 1.8Ghz dual upgrade will be faster than the dual 1.33Ghz upgrade as well as use less power, and overclock better.

The 7447A will also have about as much of a speed advantage as the clock speed would make you think in tasks that don't utilize the L3 cache. From simple things such as boot time and Finder, to things like SETI and RC5-72.
Basically, a 1.47GHz 7455 will be able to hold it's own against a 1.73GHz 7447A some of the time, but the 7447A will have the advantage in just about everything, and in many cases a very large one.
Read the thread if you're really wanting to undertand the situation. Don't just hand pick posts.

exactly. worst case scenario you will have a marginally faster set of processors, best case, it could be about a 30% faster set of processors.

BTW: I was trying to get a feel for the availability of the Dual 1.8s so I went ahead and called up XLR8. They said they're expecting their shipment to arrive next Tuesday.

Yes, less heat.
Upgrading might be something you can do veery cheaply. The Dual 7455/57 upgrades fetch quite a bit on eBay. I recently sold a Dual 1.27GHz Sonnet for about $550, and this was a few weeks after the Dual 1.73s were announced by Giga.
Grab a 7447A, turn around and sell your 7455, and you'll probably only be down about $100-200.
