Anybody else having a problem with the slot load drive in their mini (or any other computer)? I've had my mini for a few weeks (1.42 GHz, Superdrive) and have had really good luck with it so far, at least until this weekend. For some reason, my mini quit loading disks. I could push them all the way in (to the point I needed tweezers to pull them out) and the mini just wouldn't load them. Several reboots later, all seems well but it got me thinking....

How far do you generally have to push a disc in until the motor grabs it and pulls it the rest of the way in? This is my first slot loader and it seems weird to me that even when it's working right, I have to push the disc a little more than 3/4 of the way in before the motor grabs it. Seems to me that it should work like slot loading cd players in cars, (~1/2 way). Thinking I should call Apple about this one before the warrantee expires.

My slot loading super drive does not grab the disk until it is about 7/8 the way in. I think that's too far. Everytime I push a disc in I think it's not going to take it.

Sounds to me like a slow learning curve on your part

Has it ever completely refused to load one at all? I seriously had to push it all the way in until the edge of the disc was flush with the front of the mini, and it still didn't take it....

If the disc has to be pushed in 3/4-7/8 of the way in, it's behaving right. (Earlier slot-load drives that grabbed the disc when it was just 1/3 way in had the problem that the feed motors could be damaged by people who kept pushing after the motor had already "grabbed" the disc.) Note that the mini uses the same drives as the PowerBooks, iBooks, and iMacs, in case you need to compare how it is supposed to work.

But if it won't load them at all, something's not right.

It's always taken the disc. Although I've probably only done about 15 insertions since I've had the thing.
