the G5 Powermac is the first computer i have ever owned that includes *only* PCI-X slots, and not a mix of vanilla PCI and PCI-X... can anyone recommend some good options for internal soundcards that work w/in G5 towers? i would really like to get good quality RCA analog outputs on the card as well. an optimum solution would be a card that would work in both regular PCI slots as well as PCI-X slots, so i could use it in both my single 1.6GHz G5 (which has standard PCI slots) as well as my upcoming dual model, but i'm not sure if this is even technically possible considering the differences in edge connectors.

any input regarding options for internal soundcards would be greatly appreciated, i am really not wanting to go the external USB/FW box route if it is at all avoidable. thx in advance all..!

Hi!

I can't recommend a specific card, but I'd like to point out that any PCI card using 3,3V power will work in the PCI-X slots. The (usually older) ones that need 5V won't work. AFAIK the same goes for the PCI slots in the 1.5 GHz model.

I have had terrible luck with the OSX drivers for the Revolution 5.1 card. Even the lastest drivers cause my mac to not be able to shutdown/restart. Trying to play a game was a nightmare because the openal file used in the games is not compatible with the revolution soundcard (this may be fixed with the drivers for the 7.1, though). I ended up just taking the card out and I'm probably going to just sell it on eBay.

Just my $0.02...

Tyler, you use the 2496 w/in a G5's PCI-X slot w/ no issue? that is great news, as i would really like to have the gold-plated RCA outputs... i am wanting to run the stereo output directly into a pair of monoblock tube amplifiers to drive my Linn Katans... do you have any driver issues w/ your 2496 at all..?

I'm sorry... I use the 2496 with my G4. But on the midiman page it says that it's pci-x ready... that's why I posted it. I have no issues at all with it on my Digital Audio G4 DP 533... excellent quality and no noticeable latency. The only thing i don't like about these cards is that the processing is done by the CPU and not the actual cards. That goes for the Revolution series also.
