On the Apple store U.S. they dropped another $50 off. That's $100 less than they were 3 weeks ago and $300 difference from a new one.
What could this mean?
Sweet deal if you have to have one now and you have $300 extra to buy other goodies i.e. extra RAM.
The 20"ers are not selling well ... though the new 20" prices haven't budged.
A refresh is near! A refresh is near!
Apple thinks *What's $50 among fellow Mac users."
Means, I wish I wasn't between contracts ... still. That's for sure.

I wouldn't be surprised if the price dropped a bit. The 20" iMac is a relatively popular model now, and a slight price drop to $1799 would make it that much easier to justify. Let's just hope the bottom price drops - $1199 or $1099 would be a good way to close the gap between the iMac and a similarly configured Mac mini.

I hope the drop signals updates coming soon (ThinkSecret is intimating mid-April).
What I would really like to see is the introduction of a 23" model that pushes the 20" down the food chain a bit. Say, $1599-$1699 or so but with the smaller HD etc like the "High end" 17"er right now. If you think about it, the 20" is really $1799 + $100 "required" upgrade to a 160gb drive. Of course ... I say this because I would plan to add my own HD, RAM, etc anyway

I speculated in another thread I created as a poll they might release a 23" since it's the year of HD but at what price point. It didn't get many submissions and no response but out of 8 people the majority said maybe.

Would be nice but now with the dual core rumors they's probably wait till dual cores were in the Powermacs and give us a ~2Ghz dual core 23" HD iMac G5.

Actually, I'd prefer a 15" iMac at $999 or even lower. Kill off the eMac (except for education, possibly) and start selling some decently priced monitors for the Mac mini - suddenly there is some logic to the product line again. It's a mess right now.
A 23" iMac? The 23" screen is $800 more than the 20" right now. Do you want a $2700 iMac? That's stretching the brand to its breaking point.

$1599 is a steal ... best bang for the buck in the Mac lineup. If you are on the fence, get off and order yourself one of these things pronto - you won't regret it.
Of course this signals that a new model at who knows ... probably a 2GB model, maybe with 512MB instead of 256MB will be out soon. I'm thinking the base price of this model will stay the same or go up $100. If you think that's going to bring on buyer's remorse then wait, but I think your remorse would be silly.

If Apple's cost on flat panels is the same as Dell's, then they could do a 23" right now for close to the same price as the 20" iMac G5.

Just noticed...They also lowered the refurb 17" SD by $50 now $1249.
23" is certainly a stretch no pun intended. It would be hard to price it right and there's still problems with 23" displays with pink tints and dark corners.
It's the HD that's the premium vs Dells but you figure they would save on the housing, fw usb hub/controllers so at "retail prices" the 23" HD panel at $1699 plus $600 for the G5 guts, $2299 could be where they could price it.
30" hmm, my foresight was blocked by a vision of a 23" iMac.

Think of how much room a 30" iMac would have. Apple could probably fit two hard disks and dual processors in that thing. Get ready for the All-in-one PowerMac!

I think it means they have a huge stock of refurbs.
