So, I got my G5 and wanted to use my mic that I had on my old G4. To my surprise, no joy...

So, which mic will work will work in this port? Apple says a self-powered mic. However, any self powered mic that I can find are only USB. It seems strange that this is so hard to figure out

Any help would be great.

Basically, it's not a microphone input, it's an analog line-in. Powered mikes exist, just not in the computer world. Talk to a music store that carries musicians' audio gear.

You could easily get an inexpensive mixer, which would have line-level outputs, and connect it. Or an output from your stereo to record your old tapes and LPs to CD.

Griffin used to sell a little preamp-dongle that converted microphone level up to line-in level, but I was unable to get one when I tried. I ended up using their iMic with my G5. Makes mic-level input into USB, and takes any non-powered mic with a 1/8" phono plug. Works great!
