the other night i was doing some video editing and then i attempted to print my video to tape via final cut pro, but everything locked up. Final Cut nor the Finder could be force quitted. So, i turned off the computer for the night and hoped for the best the next morning.

This morning startup on OS X hung on "filesystem" something or other for over twelve hours. (i let it run when i left for work)!!!

So when i got back i opened up the case, poped out the battery, put it back in and now everytime i try to start it up, i get a kernal panic (at the grey screen with apple and progress circle at bottom).

I tried zapping the PRAM but that did nothing.

HELP!!!

What am i supposed to do?

i am on a
dual 1.25 ghz G4 mirror drive door tower
768 mb ram

HELP!!!!!!

Remove the drive, install a new drive, boot up and make sure its the startup drive, put old drive in as slave and see if you can't access it.
Then maybe you can get what you need from it. Techtool Pro 4 might help
you out.If I remember correctly it can fix b-tree problems. Hope this helps.

If you've already tried booting into single user mode and running fsck -yf and it can't fix the problem. i'd recommend that you buy a copy of Alsoft DiskWarrior 3 and boot your Mac from that CD and then see if diskwarrior can fix your computers hard drive.

I have yet to see a problem that diskwarrior cannot fix, After you correct this issue you may also want to check the S.M.A.R.T status of your drive.

today i tried running it in target disk mode via firewire to an ibook. the drive did not mount on the desktop, but was visible in disk utility and disc warrior 3. i ran both. disc ulity said it couldnt fix the error. dw3 ran for a while and wasnt able to replace the directory. i guess ill try tech tool pro. i havent tried booting it from the dw3 cd tho.

I started up with DW 3 and now i have a better idea of what i can do.
What i am going to have to do is copy the hard drive over to another and then wipe it clean.

so, now i need to purchase an internal or external drive, and it is going to have to be at least 100 gigs.

for copying this over, what would be a good drive?

and if there is a problem with overlapping files, will this problem carry over to the new drive?

all i really want to do is save my ~60 gigs of music, writing, photos, etc.

I'd go for a Seagate (5yr. warranty and quiet) or a Samsung. And check newegg.com for prices. As far as overlapping files there shouldn't be a problem just copy things in increments just in case the drive is on the way out I wouldn't push my luck.
Good Luck
