My friend is getting a mac because he likes to edit videos. He has the money for any mac he wants, but he is only 16, so i boubt he will need to do some serious editing... my question is, which of the powermac g5s would you guys recomend? i believe he would prefer a desktop for this, but then again a laptop is always nice... what should i recomend him, its his first time to get a mac. Oh yea, and what screen is better, 21 inch or 23 inch?

If your friend is responsible enough, I'd say get a PM G5 2.0 (middle ground, between the 1.8 and the 2.5), and get at least the 21"
Now, if this is just a fab, then dissuade him, otherwise he'll end up with a very expensive machine without doing what it was supposed to do...
I wouldn't recommend the portable, as it isn't as powerful, and can be dropped very easily...

Probably best to ask in the PowerMac forum. If you think he's really serious it, go for that mid range G5 - it's sweet. If he's not serious, get him to get it anyway and then he can send it me when he tires of it

The dual 1.8 with Radeon 9600XT is the best bang for the buck. He could get a better CPU and GPU if wants to game a little, and he should get as much RAM (not from Apple) as possible. He'll also want to upgrade the HD size, and get a second drive (again not from Apple) as a video scratch.

16 years old... give em an eMac or iMac.
In 2 years, give him a top of the line system. Why have him learn on a 3K system...
(and what if he doesn't like editing video)

Even though I love the current line, you should not buy a Power Mac now unless you absolutely need one. Rev. C Power Macs most certainly will be out soon, by late June (WWDC) at the latest. As far as which Mac to recommend, it depends on his needs. If he will be satisfied with a lower end system, it's probably wiser to recommend one.

Any G5 (iMac or PM doesn't matter) with enough ram and storage space.

Well...it sounds like he comes from a wealthy family. Then go all for it. If my parents made over $100k/year, then buying the dream system is only the birthday present. It's like buying a car for their children.
Unlimited Budget:
PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0+ GHz
GeForce 6800GT (ultra does not make too much of a difference)
Buy two 250+ GB HDD
Buy 2GB+ of RAM
Buy the 23" display for HDTV
Buy Canopus ADC-100 or better
Buy El Gato EyeTV 200
Buy video editing accessories
Buy a good VCR
With some budget limit, but high end
PowerMac G5 dual 1.8GHz
1 GB RAM
Two 250+GB HDD
19" Display
Plus accessories
A lot of us don't have money to drop, so that is why they are being convservative in their recommendations.
If he does not like editing videos any more, then it would be a great gaming machine.
