I've read that some mac mini's are shipping with 4200rpm hard drives, while others occasionally ship with a 5400. IS there any way to tell, other than cracking it open??

System Profiler will give you the model number. Then do a quick search for specs on the internet.

The only problem with that strategy is that apple buys drives in huge volume and then has their own model numbers that don't correspond to the manufacturers numbers.

Generally, no, the drives use standard Mfr. model numbers. I'm not sure that I've seen any ATA drives in Macs which were not standard drives even though they have an Apple logo on the label.

ChrisF. I did a little more research and you are right that Apple uses the manufacturers model numbers. But in this case... the mac mini's Seagate 4200rpm 2mb cache OEM drive is made specially for Apple, so finding the specs for it were pretty challenging initially when the mini came out since there was no information on the net about this drive. Seagate has now made this information available from what I've read.

This is a 3.5" drive correct? Otherwise it would be unbearably slow...

The Mac Mini uses 2.5" laptop drives.
