Just got a new 1.8 single G5, don't yet have a new monitor. I have an old, old, old Apple 13 inch color monitor (Model number M0401) I am hoping to use in the meantime, just to get the new machine set up and get some use out of it.

I have the G5 up and running, hooked to the old monitor. The set up is G5 -> DVI to VGA converter -> narrow VGA plug to wide VGA plug converter (part# 922-4201) -> old monitor. When I turn the system on I get scrolling horizontal white and black lines on the monitor. The colors change, from grey to blue to grey, so it seems to me I am getting signal of some sort and seeing the OS X start up movie, but I can't get any useable picture, just those rapidly scrolling lines. I hooked the monitor up as the second display on my Powerbook and it works fine, so I know it's not the problem. I have also fiddled with all of the controls on the monitor, to no avail.

Any ideas? Is what I'm attempting even possible?

Am I setting the world's record for the oldest working Apple display?

Well, my LC's 12" still works, but I imagine there are even older displays out there. . . That's an awful lot of conversion cabling there, to go from DVI to VGA to Mac Video. It probably would make more sense to wait for your new monitor or find a slightly less outdated one in the mean time.

If that's the same Apple 13" model I used to have, I think it was also locked in at 640*480, not much fun with OSX....

It appears the problem is related to that: it's a fixed frequency monitor, and the G5 can't get a sync through the digital/analog conversion.
