I take it you mean the HD icons on the desktop. If so, that's a "feature" of Panther. Basically, it constantly updates the HD icons on the desktop as to how it "thinks" they should be. I know a few people who have submitted this as a bug to Apple, but nothing has happened throughout the updates.

Put this on your wish list for Tiger and cross those fingers.

This has happened at least occasionally since OS 9 and before.

Here's an odd one. Both my B&W G3 and a G3 Powerbook I have are running Panther, and both have been through a period recently where they refused to let me change the icon of the startup disk. One even spontaneously changed back to the original icon. Both have since relented and allowed me to change them though. Very odd.

Sorry, guys I wasn't very clear. When I wake or restart my power mac the hard drive icons are moved to a different spot on my desktop. Suddenly they are on the bottom right or 4th and 5th in line instead of 1 and 2. If I put them back to where they were, they get moved again when I put the computer to sleep. I remember this happening when OSX first was released, but it stopped after one of the first or so updates. Now, it happens ALL the time on my mac.

These are the original icons hard drive, I haven't changed them.

I know what you mean. I only mentioned the "stuck" icon because it seemed to fit the name of the thread.
My icons have never moved that far after a restart, but it used to annoy me (and still does) when they move at all. Never found anything I could do about it I'm sorry to say.

I can only suggest that you backup your data, and do a clean install.

The HD icons are most likely being moved because the Finder has some invisible icons in the desired HD icon locations. It should ignore the invisibles, but apparently that isn't happening here.

Try this: install TinkerTool, make all items visible in the Finder, and let it restart the Finder so the change takes.

Move the formerly invisible files, such as the .DS_Store file. Clear the space where you want your HD icons to be. Move them to the desired locations. Then re-hide invisibles in TinkerTool, and see if the problem is fixed.
