Hi all
I MAY be getting my hands on a PowerMac G4/1.42GHz Dual CPU 512Mb 120Gb Sdrive, Model No. Apple M8841B/A
But need a few questions answering.
1) Can i install a new Airport Extreme card into it & would the wireless range exceed that of the G5?
2) Can i use a Bluetooth Mouse/Keyboard with this machine?
3) Are these machines noisey when compared to a chirrping G5?
Thanks as Always.

They are louder than the G5. More of a louder "blow drayer" sound. Not as bad as a G5 when in leaf blower mode though... you do get used to it.

Yes you can install the card, but I don't know if the range is better than a G5.
2) Can i use a Bluetooth Mouse/Keyboard with this machine?
Yes you can with an external USB Bluetooth adapter. If the unit has an internal Bluetooth module, you don't need the external one, but Apple doesn't sell the internal modules to the public.
3) Are these machines noisey when compared to a chirrping G5?
Probably noisier than a G5, but the reason I bought my MDD was for insane internal storage capacity, not pure CPU speed and sound levels. My MDD runs dnetc 24x7 and also acts as my file server. It's in my bedroom, on top of a desk, and I can sleep fine with it, so long as my APC UPS doesn't start beeping.

Not sure about the MDD models, but the range from my QS 2002 Airport card is pretty good. It sits in a room with no windows, and I can get clear reception on my Powerbook for at least 40-50 feet. It seems better than my Airport Express at home some days.
I bought the D-Link Blutooth dongle, and it works great. Installation was funny. The Windows 1/2 of the installation guide went on for 6 pages. The Mac instructions were like this: 1. Plug in to USB port 2. Done.

Depends. My dual 1.42GHz G4 came with a 120mm Delta fan. I found through reading the forums here and at G4noise.com that the 120mm Delta's are very noisy. I've since replaced it with an OEM (Apple) 120mm Panaflo which is much quieter. It's not as quiet as my friend's dual 2.5GHz G5. But it's a helluva easier to take than the original Delta fan.
You can get the 120mm Panaflo for a lot less than Apple sells it if you don't mind splicing the wires yourself. If you want something even quieter, there's always the Vortex kit's for the MDD Towers. They're a bit pricey tho.
