I have a 20" iMac G5 and a couple of weeks ago I had a power supply failure. I'm just getting the iMac back today because the power supply was backordered. According to my tech there have been a lot of similar failures (hence the backorder) and evidently it's a design probem. He says that when they fail Apple is replacing the U.S. only, 120V supply, with the international, 120-250V power supply.
At present, you can expect about a 2 week wait for a replacement supply, hence the G5 iMac might not be a good choice for a mission critical computer right now.

This is still a problem as I'm now over 2 weeks with no ETA on my failed power supply on a 17" iMac G5. What is annoying is that they are making new product (presumably with the properly designed supply) and it is sitting on shelves while previous users are without their computers for weeks.

This is the rev. A iMac G5, correct?
Any idea if the issue has been fixed with the rev. B's?

I had the same problem. Took the machine in to my local Apple store, they quoted me 5 business days to replace the PSU. That was Saturday, today is Sunday and I have my machine back up and running smoothly. That's less than a 24 turn around on a weekend! I'm impressed. My imac is a 20' purchased Nov. 04.

Too early to say, but the new iMacs have the international power supplies only. Is there a power supply issue with the international power supplies too, or will switching to the international power supplies solve the problem?

The power supply on my 17" Rev A iMac G5 went up in smoke yesterday. Symptoms: Same acrid stench others have reported, plus a sharp sizzling sound and a puff of smoke from the lower right vent. Took it into the Apple Store today. They had to order a new power supply; they expect it in 4 to 7 days. Until then, no iMac. Sigh.

Quick update. Got the power supply (finally) and it does work. But now my iMac is much louder than before with a lot of evident fan noise. Was this a problem with the way it was put back together? Any suggestions for fixes?
