Hi all.
Any advise on this would be much appreciated.
I have been using a 17" 1.33 PowerBook for a couple of years as my main work computer. It has been feeling very very sluggish (especially in comparison to the G5 desktop I have in the office, but also, interestingly, compared to my old G4 at home souped up with a 1.25 Ghx card from OWC).
This week the ethernet port on my PowerBook fried and yesterday I ran out and got a new iMac G5 20", to keep everyhting running at work while the PB gets fixed, and also because it was an opportunity to put myself on a faster working computer.
I put the PB in firewire target disk mode and imported everything to the new iMac G5.
I cam in today to fiddle some more and get some work done, and to my surprise, the iMac G5 feels similarly sluggish to the PowerBook it is replacing.
That makes me think the problem must be software related?
The G5 desktop feels like a jet compared to this.
RAMwise I am still at the default amount, I've ordered 2 Gigs. But the sluggishness is in basic GUI stuff even with nothing running.
I thought maybe Stuffit Deluxe 8.0 was the culprit (it's menu function bogging things down?) but I can't figure out how to uninstall it (still in all the menus etc.). Anyone know how to do this?
Also anyone know what could be causing this effect?
This machine should rip compared to my laptop, be really snappy like the G5 desktop, it's got to be a software problem I imported from my PB, because like I said, the PB was sluggish even compared to a slower G4 at home with equal RAM.
Thanks for any thoughts......
Cheers
Scott

I suppose your machine runs the pre-installed OS. Is re-installing OS X from scratch an option at this point? If yes, then give it a try. Sometimes there are broken things in factory OS installations. Besides, this way you know well what is installed on your machine.

Hi, thank you for your response. You are right, I may have to do that, but I'm going to wait a bit.
Cheers

I almost cancelled my iMac G5 order because when I ran XBench on the display G5 at the store, it scored 113 versus my wife's iBook at 108. Turns out it was a software setting on the processor. Go to System Preferences, Energy Saver, and set the processor performance to "highest". That should take care of your problem.
