So I've got this nasty burning smell coming from my fairly new iMac. It started last night after about 4 hours of being on then all of a sudden my room is filled with this rank odor. Not sure exactly what it is, thought about taking the unit apart to see if there's any physical damage done thats visable but do not have time before work this morning.

I hoped it was just something flukey but after about 5 minutes of being on this morning its the same thing. It appears to be coming from the slot along the top portion of the back of the computer.

Anybody have any suggestions? I think it'll be time to flex my Applecare muscle with this one.

Any help is deffinetly appreciated here folks.

The Apple discussion site has several reports of this problem which seems to be a bad power supply. For more info check this link.

I actually had the same thing happen to me a couple days ago. Everything is running just fine for now. I figured it was the fan acting up again. Well, I guess it is time to call Apple again.

I should have spent the extra money and bought a PowerMac or just kept my iMac G4. This thing has been had nothing but problems from day one.

Well, it is the power supply but it turns out the guy working on it snapped one of the screws off along the bottom of the machine while pulling apart the back panel.

So now it turns out that that part was received today but they don't know when the power supply will be in, there's no ETA on it which is royally pissing me off right about now because i'm sitting here typing on a 15" DELL laptop.

Then again.........................this machine has worked flawlessly for the past year

Time to bitch to Apple about a rediculous situation such as this where they can't come up with power supplies for myself or any other individual that needs them. That and the fact that this is talked about in the above posted link on APPLE's site and Apple is doing nothing about it and its obviously well documented, the least they could do is send out a notice to owners. This is leaving a bit of a sour taste in my mouth right about now.

I had my 400mhz G4 for a good 2 years run flawlessly and now this.

Just had the same exact thing happen about a month ago. It was the power supply starting to go out according to the Apple Tech. that looked at it. They replaced it and I haven't had an issue since.

Uh huh, but how long did it take them? I'm thinking about 2 weeks for a replacement unit from what I've been reading about back ordered power supplies for mine.

Took them 4 days at the Apple Dealer here in my small town. They must have had one (power supply) in stock. I think about 3 days was them plugging it in and having to vacate their work area from the smell. Since the unit was functioning fine, they eneded up contacting Apple for advice and repaired it promtply. Be politely forceful and let them know you you need it returned ASAP. Your results could vary

Good Luck... Kenny

Well, I took my iMac to my local service center today. They are replacing the midplane and power supply. The burning smell is a power supply issue and they are going to try and fix my noise issue. Hopefully I will get to feel good about my iMac again. They told me that the power supply would be here by Tuesday and the midplane by Monday. Sound good to me.

So it turns out as of Friday night I was told the power supply would be in this Tuesday. We shall see.

The other part they the guy at the store broke was called "Screen with bezel" or something along those lines. Either way the entire screen needed to be replaced because he broke a screw off in the bottom of the bezel. $1,043 later they got the part in the next day I guess and everything is good to go and I'm still waiting for the f-ing power supply.

The guy was kinda cool about it, told me not to take this the wrong way but "that was one expensive screw".

Sounds like it would have been cheaper to replace the machine. Hope everything goes smoothly from here for you. I'm hoping to have mine back by Wednesday at the latest.

My iMac is the 17" 1.8GHz model. Do they have the same power supply?

I ordered my iMac when they where first introduced but had the power supply replaced once already. The first one wasn't defective but Apple felt that it might help with the fan noise issue. I was told that a certain batch of power supplies where failing. When it comes right down to it who really knows besides Apple?

Different power supplies. They had 17" model power supplies but no 20" ones of course.
