Hi
I'm thinking of getting a Mac mini as a music jukebox and DVD player. Has anyone connected the mini to a CRT TV via the adapter you can get from Apple?
I'm not expecting to be able to run Mac OS at high resolutions, but i'd be interested to know how readable/usable it would be on a 28" Sony.
Thanks

I use my 12" powerbook with a 28" widescreen Sony TV (although it's an oldish one). I have a strange problem where the screen is displaced by about 3/4 of an inch (so I have a black bar down the right hand side). I've also not been able to get it into quite the right resolution, and I'd say it would be useless for trying to read stuff on the screen. I find it sufficient for watching the odd DivX on TV, but I don't think I'd buy a mini just for that purpose, with the quality and functionality I'm getting. I'm not sure how much of it is down to the age of the TV and my hacked together set up though, so YMMV.

I just plugged my mini to a Pioneer 50" plasma and it works great. Plugging into a CRT should not be a problem.

Question, instead of making a new thread..
I want to try out my mini on my TV, what should I get?
It's a 24" CRT RCA TV. I plan on replacing it with a 32" or a 36" eventually.
The one I have only has RCA jacks. I already have a Stereo "Y" adapter for the audio. What do I need for the video? The TV also has S-Video, and the one I plan on replacing it with will also have RGB.
Now, I know on this TV it won't look all that great, I don't care. I just wanna know what I should use.

Ideally, your new TV might have DVI or HDMI input, as both of those are digital. RGB comes a fairly close second on an analog TV. S-video will probably give satisfactory results at 800x600 and below. I've tried using the S-video adapter with a CRT HDTV and the 854x480 (widescreen) option appears and looks OK, but nothing to write home about. Composite will give nothing but miserable results.
One point you might want to keep in mind is burn-in - unless you use quite aggressive screensaver timing, you risk burning images into the display with CRT and plasma. DLP and LCD screens aren't susceptible to burn-in, and many such sets have VGA and/or DVI/HDMI input.

So, I should look into RGB or S-Video? (As it would be a long time before I could afford a TV with HDMI or DVI.)
What adapters do I need to buy? Where can I get them?

Links like that to the online Apple store that contain a string of seemingly random numbers and letters will time-out after a few minutes. Also, while the link IS active, someone else could use it to add items to YOUR shopping cart. Although, they could not check out without your password, it could lead to a surprise the next time you do check out!
It is possible to make a static link to the item if you know the Apple part number:
