I'm about to switch to an IMac G5 from my current [and home-built] Windows PC. My boss is dictating this change, and I'm not too happy about it. That said, I'm attempting to research everything I can about the G5, because I cannot afford to be without my data and communication capabilities.
I've been researching most of the day and it sounds like Mac may be upgrading the G5 in the not-to-distant future. Tiger, I want. But Thinksecret is suggesting the G5 may have a significant h/w overhaul upon release of Tiger. Anyone know more about this?
Furthermore, I obviously need to transfer all my documents, p/p presentations, spreadsheets, etc to the Mac. Is there a pain-less way to do this? I'd gladly pay for any software that helps me with this endeavor.

You don't need to pay for anything if what you've been using is Office. Just make sure that you get Office 2004 for the Mac and you're all set.
Ethernet's probably the cheapest way to transfer files, but an external USB or FireWire storage device is probably an easier method.

Well BadMojo, from what I understand, Apple may be upgrading the G5 chip sometime in the near future... however, tiger might be released at the same time as an updated G5.... so.. I'd say that you should probably decide to just go for broke and combine the files of both systems and run the darker operating system.
That is just one man's opinion.

What I did when i switched from a PC to my Mini was turned the FTP server built into OS X on and then just FTP'd from my Windows box to the Mini and placed my documents there. It was very fast and simple.

also, what sort of profession are you in that your boss dictates the use of a Mac rather than a PC?

Obviously a place that actually knows what they are doing.
Make sure to tell us how the experience is for you, and we can of course help you get used to the new system.
