Why Is Apple No Longer Selling The 9800XT BTO?

Out of curiosity I went to configure a Power Mac and noticed that the 9800XT is now conspicuously absent from the graphics card selection menu. The only choices available are the FX 5200, the 9600XT and the 6800 Ultra. It's pretty unfortunate that new Power Mac buyers can only get a decent card BTO by going to the high end, adding a hefty $500 to the price. Hopefully the speed bump will introduce additional options. I just have to wonder why Apple stopped selling my G5's card.

My guess is they removed it for one of two reasons:
- It wasn't selling much anymore with the Radeon 9600, Geforce 6800 Ultra and GT being available (the GT is still available as a standalone item). Most people I know weren't recommending the Radeon 9800XT anymore since it's only a bit better than the Radeon 9600XT. IMHO, the Radeon X800XT or Geforce 6800 Ultra are better worth the upgrade price.
- It is being replaced by a newer card (possibly the Radeon X800XT), but the newer card is not available, yet.

Sad, as I love my 9800xt.
I bought it from a dead BTO G5, and it has worked like a champ for the last 6 months...
Can't imagine why they would discontinue it at the moment when there is not that much in the same performance/features/pricepoint out there.

Only a bit better than the 9600XT? I think you need to look again at the benchmarks.

I hope the 9800 is unavailable because Apple stopped ordering them in favor of the next-gen video cards. You know, the PCIe ones for the next-gen PowerMacs. Assuming the new PMs were delayed a bit, that would explain running out of the 9800 cards. Kind of like when the iMac G5 was delayed after Apple stopped making the iMac G4s.
