My DA is very quiet (and nearly silent) compared to the MDDs I use at school, and my old Yikes G4.

DA is the quietest unless you put a damn noisy Sonnett upgrade card in it Original MDD are way too loud, avoid them, I think the FW800 was better?

Probably a netbooted Cube that's had its hard drive removed.

Get one with the original Radeon, and there'd be no fans whatsoever.

How to netboot a Mac:

(or you could just use the netboot capability built into Mac OSX server...)

Man, this is the wrong thread at the wrong time.

I have a MDD dual 1.25 Ghz, and it has always been sorta loud. I did the Apple power supply replacement thing, and all was generally OK.

But just recently, like yesterday, when I wake the machine from sleep, the fan kicks into another gear. It's literally like having a vacuum cleaner running right next to me. I can barely hear my desk phone ring.

So I jump into these forums to see if perhaps there was some sort of quick fix via settings (ie. - not replaceing fans and the such), and the first thread I see is this... with folks chiming in about how quiet their models are.

Bastards!

EDIT: I just remembered that I updated to 10.3.9 yesterday morning... just before this turbo noise kicked up. Hmmmm.

I took a look. No download file found. It's not located on VersionTracker, either, though the info page is there.

If you want to make it quiet, you should create a water cooled PowerMac solution

My G4 QS sounds like a small air compressor compared to my mom's g5.. well sorta.. it's about as noisy as a hair dryer on low/medium without the whiney noise.

Oh, certainly, I have downloaded it some time ago, so if you want, just let me know a mail where I can send it for you, it is only 212 KB and since it is free I dont think I am acting out of law.

Doesn't help if you have a QS, or "graphite" type of G4 though, those have no heat sensors/control whatsoever (well, some of the old ones have temp sensors on the processors but they're not really used for anything) -- a HUGE shame considering most ATX boards have had thermal monitoring since 1998 or so.

Seems to just check the temperature, and also log it on a graph for you if you're interested. I'm not sure why it is implicated as a decibel measurement device.

In case you're interested, Temperature Monitor has the same functions but can be displayed in the menu bar.

When i plugged a 23" ACD Monitor into the Dual MDD 1.42, i got a message saying either restart the computer or hold down the power button for a few seconds, which switched the comp off..

What was going on? by the way i sent the MDD back.

KP! I'm confused. You didn't plug it in when the MDD was on, right?

Wow that's a way to jump into a thread, asking about a monitor lol..

Did you plug it in when the computer was already on, or before turning it on? If you did so before turning it on, I would have checked if the video card came loose, if not I would have had it checked for problems.. weird.

If you plugged it in while it was running, that's easy to explain.. while you can usually hot plug displays on a powermac, you really shouldn't do that with ADC ones since they draw power from the power supply, this means that in a few cases it can cause a voltage drop. If that's happening, it could cause the machine to crash. *nod*
