Hi, I'm hoping someone could help please! The superdrive in my 1 ghz imac g4 does not recognize DVDs. It doesn't even spin them. It just sits there and then ejects them. It recognizes CDs just fine and will spin and play them. Does anyone have an idea of what I can/should do? Thanks!

Not sure if this helps, but the model number of the drive is: sony dw-u10a.

Do you think this could be a firmware or region issue? I was able to reinstall using my panther dvd. But when it boots up and I insert a movie, nothing happens.

I appreciate all your help!

Are the DVD's DVD-R or DVD+R ?

I don't think the G4 iMac can read DVD+R.

Or maybe it's not blank DVD's you're questioning about ?

Hi Fonzie,

Thanks for helping! Actually I tried it with movie DVDs and the iLife installation. When I used the DVD for iLife, it didn't recognize it. Then when I used the CD, it said that I should use the DVD because it recognized that I had the superdrive.

Thank you!!

Hi, I'm having the same problem with my superdrive. Did you ever find out what was causing it or find a solution? I can't read DVDs period.
Thanks,
Jeff

Hey Jeff, I've been told that there is something wrong with the superdrive itself (the laser,so I'm told but I didn't have anyone take it apart to examine it...the people I spoke with just had experience) Anyway, I was told that the only way to fix it is to either get a new superdrive or just use an external drive. Sorry about the bad new... Good luck!

I have the same problem.

I brought it back to the store twice, they replaced the Superdrive and the logic board, and still it didn't work.

I did a archive and install and this solved the problem.

And two weeks later the superdrive again didn't read DVDs.

I was recommended to buy DiscWarrior to repair possible damage in the file names.
