Wow, it has been some time since I have worked with OS 8.6 so I can't tell you off the top of my head what needs to be done. 8.6 doesn't automatically set the system to connect to the network like OS 9 and above. The easiest way to get everything to work would be to run the Internet Setup Assistant. Here is a link that might help to get you started.
http://www.pleasehelp.com/macOS8_new/tutorial.htm
When you get to the step that tells you to select Modem or Network you will need to choose Network. Just follow the steps from there. Also, make sure that your router will allow the MAC address or the network cards address to connect to the network. In other words if you have your router set up to only allow certain MAC addresses on your network you will need to make sure that you have included this one as well.
I wish I could help you a little more but it has been so long since I have had to use 8.6 that my memory is a little fuzzy
Maybe someone else can chime in with better step by step instructions.

Ok I got it to work , somehow, through the internet setup assitant, but I can't get it connected it asks for an IP address I don't have but when I connected it (using my computers ip adddress lol and subnest mask /router configuration) it told me the IP address was already in use and the other ip didn't work.

Go to the TCP/IP control panel, select connect via 'Ethernet', and using DHCP. Close and save changes, restart if it doesnt work straight away.
