Got a G4 as a gift (lucky me!) but the optical drive won't read, so I got a replacement that is 3/8" too long and now the drive door won't shut. The original was an APPLE DVDRW PD105 (reading from the label) and is 7 3/4" long. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement? I've searched the web and, of course, these were discontinued in 2003. I just want to make sure that a new one will fit cause I really want to use the G4... on an old iMac right now.... Thanks!

I bought a Lite-On DVD-RW dual layer (SOHW-1653, I think!) for my Quicksilver G4 a few weeks ago, and well I'm not sure if it was 7 3/4", but it was shorter than the original superdrive (Pioneer 103) that came out.

Look after my manor, or I will bum you, literally, to death.

If the drive won't fit you could always buy an external firewire or USB2 powered case
to put the drive in and use it there. Not elegant but at least it would work.

I purchased a pioneer dual layer dvd burner and replaced the original pioneer dvd burner on my G4 MDD (1ghz). I had to pop the plastic bevel off the front of the new cd burner in order for it to fit. You might have to do something similar. Here is how you do it:

1. Hook up the new optical drive to the power source and eject the tray.
2. Grab the bevel on the front lip of the drive tray and pull down (or up, I can't remember). It pops right off.
3. Push the drive tray back into the drive and install the drive.

It should fit now.

same scenario here, I popped the front thing off and it was fine.

also i cut the ATA ribbon by accident. don't do that, it's a bitch to find a replacement, expecially since it means you'd have to pull out a lot of the hardware just to loop it the way apple does..

Hmmm... thanks everyone... I will see if I can do that.... BUT... all the screws line up and the carrier goes in just fine... the hind end sticks out of the back of the carrier (so I can't get the back plate on) and keeps the hard drive door from closing. Seems to me, if I took off the front bezel, it wouldn't affect the rear measurement because it would still sit in the carrier the same. Am I explaining that right? The "new" dvd is an old Pioneer DVR 103. I was thinking that maybe I should just go ahead and buy a real new one... any suggestions for what I should get that wouldn't have to be retrofitted?

thanks again!
