1. Any G3 will run OS 9.

2.As far as spyware is concerned there is no need for a scanner since, if I remember correctly, there was never any spyware for OS 9 or below. As a matter of fact there isn't any for OS X. I don't think there was ever a scanner made for OS 9 or below.

3.What G3 model do you have? Some of them could view DVDs and some could not. You can go to www.everymac.com and search for you model Mac.

4. I don't think there was ever a freeware firewall made for OS 9 or below. You can alway try NetBarrier. I used it under OS 9. I am unaware of a pop-up blocker.

Here is a link for Netbarrier: http://www.intego.com/netbarrier/

I see what you are saying now. The G3 already has a DVD drive right?

OS 9 has a DVD player bundled in with the OS. That is really the only thing stopping you from playing a DVD. OS 8.6 didn't have one if I remember correctly. Also, if the system only has 4MB or less video memory DVD play will be terrible.

What color is your G3? Is it a tower or desktop and do you know what speed the processor is running at?

I'm having problems finding OS 9. I found a helper updater for os 9.1 or 2 or something but its telling me I need to upgrade to OS 9 first.

One of these pages might help http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/OSX/OS_X_...layer_mod.html
http://web.tiscali.it/thinkdifferent...o/y&y.html
The 2nd link says OS 8.6 has DVD player 1.2. Do a search for DVD player or look through your OS 8 install cd with Tomeviewer.

You would have to buy OS 9 somewhere to be able to use the updater. If you can get the DVD player to work, stick with 8.6. It's a good, stable OS. I still use it on my G3 233 iMac. Otherwise, if you're going to spend money on a new OS anyways, just buy 10.4 Tiger on Friday.

If your B&W has a DVD drive factory installed, you may NOT need a software player! Most of them shipped with a DVD decoder card piggybacked onto a Rage 128 video card, and it worked much better than ANY software player of that era.....

check your Apple System Profiler to find out

Also, you WILL have to buy OS 9 if you want it, it is NOT a free update from 8.6

But to get that machine to run OS X effectively, you MUST have 1GB of ram and a faster CPU (600mhz minimum!). A Radeon 7000 along with a bigger & faster-than-stock HD wont hurt either.
But all this upgrading is probably not worth it unless you intend to keep this machine for several more years instead of buying a new mac......

If my B&W wasnt already maxed out, I would buy a new(er) machine in a minute
Signatures are ugly. Bitchy women are ugly......YOU do the math :)

My brother is running a B&W 400MHz with 768MB RAM and the stock video card. He is running OS X Panther. It does great with surfing the net and other simple tasks. The machine doesn't need to be upgraded to the max in order to work good. Just don't expect blazing fast speeds.

If you are going to update to OS X I would advise you to get at least 512MB RAM. Anything less is a disaster. Also, running OS X even though it may be slower would make your life easier than running OS 9.

I agree with discotronic. I had an iMac DV 400MHz with 640MB of RAM. Even though it was not the fastest thing ever, it took OS X.2 fine.

according to the stuff I read G3's blue 350 should be able to get all the way up to 10.2 but not further then that.

I have a new problem, I spilled juice on my keyboard and now it won't work. I was looking for drivers for my other keyboards, I have a compaq one and a mircoinnovations wireless keyboard not counting the mac keyboard that is currently fried.

I'm not sure how to find drivers for the keyboard for the mac, I don't suppose just plugging the regular keyboard in would let it work.

Your system can be upgraded all the way to Tiger 10.4. Any keyboard will work as long as it is a USB keyboard. If it is a PS/2 keyboard there are adapter that can be used. They run about $10 at any electronics store.

well not this USB keyboard. Technically USB, I have a wireless keyboard and mouse that the base plugs into my USB port, the problem is the mircoinnovations only has EXE files which I can't install the drivers to have the keyboard recognized on the mac.
