Any one here from the Northwest of England (round Manchester particularly)?
Do they feel like helping out a fellow Mac User, and possibly getting a FREE RAM upgrade at the same time?

Here is the thing. On the 17th I bought a 1.8 dual G5 From John Lewis at Cheadle, And today Apple has upgraded these systems to 2 Ghz dual for the same price. John Lewis has a 28 day 'no questions' returns policy (the goods just have to be in 'new' condition and in the original packaging) So I could return my 1.8 G5 and get a NEW 2ghz G5 in return .*
The only problem with this is that as soon as I got My new mac I realised that the Apple Installed 256mb of RAM was a pitiful amount, So I ordered 1GB of RAM from Crucial, unfortunately to fund this upgrade I sold the Apple RAM on e-bay. So if I do a strait swap for a new G5 I would end up with a downgrade in RAM(DOH).

This is where I need some help, IF there is someone in the NorthWest area with a dual G5 with the ORIGINAL Apple 256Mb of RAM, I propose a swap, I would (take out my 1Gb of RAM and) put your 256mb in my G5, take it back to John Lewis, exchange it, and give you the 512Mb that is in the NEW G5 (then put my 1Gb in instead). I get a FREE CPU upgrade, you would get a FREE RAM upgrade, everybody wins.
(*I am going to call John Lewis tomorrow and confirm that I can do this)

Put in any old 128 ram stick - I really doubt they check. Or if they do - try to get your hands on a stick of Micron ram - that's what apple uses. There are many myths surrounding "Apple ram" - most of which have been spread by Apple themselves. Apple just buys from suppliers the same as everyone else.

Hm, it's possible that they stick different RAM in British G5's, but here in Holland (and I think they do come from the same "factory-deliver-to-Europe" they tend not to stick in Micron RAM, but Samsung I believe (please correcct me if I am wrong). But I doubt as well they will check, on the other hand, it's almost to easy to open up the G5 case: I just added 2 GB in my Dual 2.0 and boy it makes a difference to go from 512 MB to 2.5 GB

The 'just stick in any old RAM' idea would be fine, except the G5's are VERY picky about RAM. (I originally bought 2 additional 128's to go with the Apple 128's to up the RAM to just 512, these didn't work). Also don't happen to have 2 '128Mb Non ECC PC3200 DDR SDRAM' DIMM's hanging about.
Asking for DIMM's out of a Dual G5, is just to make sure they will work.

As with every commodity component, Apple doesn't use just one brand of RAM -- they use Micron, Samsung, Hynix, and probably others. (Those are the ones I've seen the most.)

Well, as said, I have these 2 256MB original RAM installed by Apple inside, which sooner or later I'm going to throw away as they will be replaced by 1GB ones. You can have them if you want since I will not use them anyway after a while, but I guess this is not solving your problems?

The Deal is off anyway.
Just called John Lewis and they daid that they could only refund me the value -10%, so the upgrade to the just released G5 with 2Ghz CPU's would cost me £139. so allong with the problems of moving my data, and the RAM thing. I have decided against it.
