My iMac does not see the internal 56k modem. Thought it must be faulty so bought a new one and replaced it. Still nothing.
I tried a fresh install of Panther from disk and still no hardware recognition for the modem. I tried a fresh install of 9.2 also with no luck. The eithernet port comes up in Preferences>Networking>Network Port Configurations but Internal Modem will not. In System Profiler it reports that there is a modem present but Internet Connect reports no modem hardware and Internet Setup Assistant greys out the "dial up/internal modem" option leaving only eithernet and DSL connections as a option.
The modem shows up in System Profiler:
Modem V.90
Driver: Unknown (vl.2.6)
Digging around System Profiler's Extensions listing I've found some possible trouble spots, the following Extensions are reported as Not Loaded:
IOSerialFamily 6.0
InternalModemSupport 2.2.2
InternalUSBModem 2.6.3
These are all .kext files and I am still unfamiliar with X's whole OS structure so I'm not sure what part of it would enable these Extensions or if they should be loaded all the time or not.
I'd hate to think I got 2 bunk modems and I'd hate to yank the whole MB again to get at it as I've already opened it up a 2nd time to make sure I had it seated correctly. It's true I can get some other external device to run internet but I'm limited, dial-up is my only option where I live and since the iMac has no expansion capabilities it seems USB is my only option.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts anyone might have.
