This is a serious problem for businesses like mine... where we have 150+ macs on a like-image... we just finally got them up to Panther... over 20 are coming off lease.... now we're being "forced" to upgrade to Tiger???

A homogeneous environment is preferable, but what about just installing Tiger on the new machines?
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

This has been the case for all new machines Apple has introduced. Any machine introduced will have as it's minimum OS the one that was current when the machine was introduced.

My old Lombard Powerbook came out when Mac OS 8.6 was the current shipping OS. It won't boot anything earlier than 8.6

My old QuickSilver G4 came with 10.0.4 and 9.2.1. It wouldn't boot anything earlier than that (or any build of OS X 10.0.4 earlier than the one the computer shipped with).

My PowerBook G4 came with 10.2.1 and 9.2.2. It won't boot anything earlier than that.

The new machines probably require support built into Tiger, and that support won't be back ported to 10.3.9...

sounds like you'll just have to maintain a second image for Tiger. Get it as close to possible with what you have on your Panther machines (apps, security settings, etc.).

It's hard when you're on a replacement cycle to keep even the new machines on the same image as the old one. I keep at least 2-3 images, new computers usually force the new image.
