Hey all - I finally stepped into the G5 club with my purchase of a Dual 2.3. I'm quite excited about this. I upgraded the stock harddrive to 400 GB. I'll be buying 2 gigs of Crucial RAM to take it to 2.5 gigs, and will be also buying a Raptor 10,000 SATA drive (73 GB.) Now here's my question:

I've heard from a few places that I should use the 10,000 rpm drive for boot and apps. In my prior experience I've used the fastest drive for the pro audio work - you know where I store all my Digital Performer files and audio. Where's the better speed gain?

Would love your opinions on how to divy it up. The way I see it, there are two scenarios:

1: 400 gig - partitions
130 GB - Boot, Apps and Documents (photos, mp3s, etc)
130 GB - Boot, Apps and Documents CLONE
140 GB - Archives and Video (Video for firewire playback in conjunction with audio in DP)
73 gig - DP Projects and Audio

2: 73 gig - Boot and Apps
400 gig - partitions
73 GB - Boot and Apps CLONE
177 GB - DP Projects / Audio and Documents (photos, mp3s, etc - backup on firewire)
150 GB - Archives and Video (Video for firewire playback in conjunction with audio in DP)

Thanks for any feedback!!!

i dont think you can do 2.5gb ram, rams have to be installed in pairs... unless the 512mb ram that comes with the g5 is 2x256...

All Ram in G5's must be installed in pairs, so it will always be 2x module.

And I'd choose option #2 : Boot and Apps on the 10,000 RPM drive...

Serial ATA is fast enough that unless you're using 40-50 audio files in a song, it shouldn't much matter which way you go. I ran a mix with 17 audio tracks a couple days ago reading audio from and writing the mix back to the same drive that Logic and OS X are on. Disk usage never got over about 40%. (Dual 2.0)

- 9650 256MB card
- Extra 3GB of RAM

So what's the advantage of putting the system and apps on the 10,000 rpm drive? Won't most of the important stuff on the system drive be loaded into the ram?

In my old setup, a dual 800 (g4) i used a ultra 160 scsi card, and an 18 gig 10000 rpm drive served as my audio drive. performance was quite snappy....

Thanks again! Excited to get the new rig, but really crossing my fingers everything gets along with tiger!!!

Not necessarily - there are a lot of files that can't all be cached in main RAM. Also, the pagefile is on the boot drive. Yes it can be moved, but most people don't bother.
