I just got a dual 2Ghz powermac and I'm dissapointed with the noiselevel. It makes a very annoying 'chirping' sound.

In fact the noise can be influenced by the Bresink Systemload tool available at http://www.bresink.de/osx/SystemLoad.html. This tool puts maximum load on the processors alternating between the two. Changing the frequency of alternating creates a tune.. The tune can clearly be heard.

If in CHUD the NAP MODE is disabled the tune can no longer be heard. Still the chirping noise during normal work is present.

Is this noise normal for powermac g5 duals? Could someone try to reproduce the tune using Systemload? Any other hints to reduce the noise of the powermac?

It's a shame that such a nice machine makes this terrible noise.

Hi bierbuik.

I've heard of this happening with some older Power Mac G5s, but I have yet to experience it for myself. My work has kept me around Power Mac G5s since the end of 2003, probably over seven in total. But even with full load or alternating loads between the processors, I haven't heard any chirping. My fiance and I just got our own Dual 2.7 machine, and running it through its paces over the last couple of days there has been no evidence of chirping.

Some other people think that it is actually the power supply unit and not the processors. XLR8YourMac.com has a number of tips on how to combat the issue you are experiencing.

Let us know what course of action you take and if it solves your problem.

I have had the original 2x2ghz G5 since it first came out. It is dead silent other than when the fans power up occasionally. No chirping whatsoever. I seem to remember those who had the problem sending their machine back to Apple for new power supplies, and the "fixed" machines no longer chirped.

This is the case with even the oldest G5's. They all chirp.

I just had mine "Fixed" a week ago with a rev 5 (from my rev 2) and it is the same.

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"

I am scheduled to get mine fixed under warranty, I really really hope that it solves the problem, but I know it's just luck of the draw. I just went from a single 1.6 that ran quiet to this dual 1.8 and that chirping noise is about to drive me nuts.

Sorry about that - I know it does not help, but my new dual 2,3 Ghz is very silent. Good luck with your next draw.
