Hi, I'm a new user. I've got a DA 733MHz and a Pismo 500 that I'm contemplating selling and buying a Mac Mini with a small digital LCD display. I really don't need anything quite as portable as a laptop (I do travel some, but I can put the mini in my bag with CD's, cables, and keyboard/mouse and keep my LCD in the original box) and they have a pretty nice price premium, even a 12" iBook compared to this idea. But I need something I can use as a desktop at home, too. I considered an eMac but it's too heavy. I considered an iMac G5 but it's too expensive. I considered a used or refurb'd iMac G4, but I think I can beat the performance in most things with a mini with enough RAM. Toting the DA is mucho heavy. The mini with a 15" LCD seems to be the thing for me, unless someone has a better alternative. It's mostly for web surfing/email, GenieSoft ScoreWriter 2, MP3, and older games (Diablo II, Warcraft III, Tony Hawk 3, SNES emulation). I think the mini w/512MB of RAM would be a good fit for me...what do you think? Also, what about a decent-quality LCD in the 200-250 range?

Your needs sound about like mine however I dont really play any games. I think the Mini will handle the games you mentioned but some semi-gamers may want to chime in on how well the Mini's GPU will fare with what you are interested in.
As far as an LCD monitor, keeps your eyes open at www.slickdeals.net and www.ableshoppers.com - those two sites always have good deals on LCD monitors and other electronics.
My 19" Dell LCD was shown on slickdeals and I got it for about $320 shipped, a few weeks later they had it for $250 + shipping.... A lot of people on these boards have the Dell LCD monitors and have been very satisfied. Check out the Peripherals forum and read the Dell LCD monitor threads.

I should have mentioned that the aforementioned games play on my lady's eMac 1.25 very well, so I'm not worried about performance on them, and 1.25GHz or 1.42GHz is a huge step up from my DA. I'm mostly concerned with a blend of portability and usability, having something that's an upgrade from the DA, and a decent LCD. I've heard of good things in Dell's displays, so I'll persue that.

Does the Mini come with any software outside of iLife and OS X? Like Appleworks or anything of the sort?

ordered the mini last night, the 1.42/80GB version witha combo drive. I also ordered a 1GB stick of PC2700 from Crucial.com so that it's not so sluggish when I get it. I can hardly wait! it'll be the fastest Mac I've ever laid hands on.

Mini arrived a couple days ago. Holy cow, this thing is cool. Much faster in pretty much all regards to my DA 733, which still had all its original hardware other than upgraded RAM and hard drive. Everything is much faster, but that's what happens when you nearly double the CPU speed.
I ended up going with a Phillips monitor on Newegg, which should arrive either tomorrow or Monday, mehopes...
